The SFF-8087 interface is mainly used on MINI SAS 4i array cards as an internal SAS connection cable.
This adapter cable supports data transmission through four channels of 3Gbps * 4Lane, with a transmission speed of 12Gbps.
SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), also known as Serial Attached SCSI, is a new generation of SCSI technology. Similar to the popular Serial ATA (SATA) hard drives, it uses serial technology to achieve better transmission speed and improves internal space by shortening connection lines. SAS is a brand new interface developed after parallel SCSI interfaces. The design of this interface is to improve the efficiency, availability, and scalability of the storage system, and to provide compatibility with SATA hard drives.
The interface technology of SAS can be backward compatible with SATA. Specifically, the compatibility between the two is mainly reflected in the compatibility between the physical layer and the protocol layer. At the physical layer, SAS interfaces and SATA interfaces are fully compatible, and SATA hard drives can be directly used in SAS environments. In terms of interface standards, SATA is a sub standard of SAS, so SAS controllers can directly control SATA hard drives. However, SAS cannot be directly used in SATA environments because SATA controllers cannot control SAS hard drives; At the protocol layer, SAS consists of three types of protocols, which are used for data transmission based on the different devices connected. The Serial SCSI-Protocol (SSP) is used to transmit SCSI-commands; The SCSI Management Protocol (SMP) is used for the maintenance and management of connected devices; The SATA Channel Protocol (STP) is used for data transfer between SAS and SATA. Therefore, with the combination of these three protocols, SAS can seamlessly integrate with SATA and some SCSI devices.
